Garbage Disposal Installation and Repair

Garbage Disposal Repair vs. Replacement

Installing a new garbage disposal is not in everyone's budget. When possible, we try to carry out repairs instead of recommending replacement to keep costs reasonable for you. However, if your garbage disposal was installed over 10 years ago and is giving you recurring problems, it may be time to consider a replacement.

If replacement is recommended, we will help you find the right unit that suits your preferences. Factors to consider when choosing a new garbage disposal include the level of horsepower, whether you prefer stainless steel parts, and the level of noise during operation.

When It is Time to Replace the Garbage Disposal

  1. The unit is 10 years old or older and it is making noises that won’t go away

  2. Frequent clogging

It may be that the unit is too small for the number of people in your home. Here is a chart about the size of the garbage disposal unit you need for the number of people in the home:

4 or more people = 1 hp.

2 to 4 people =  ¾ hp

1 to 2 people = ½ hp to 1/3 (depends on usage)

If you don’t know what you’re doing it can be very dangerous to try to fix a garbage disposal yourself. The risk of getting a deep cut or electric shock is high while tinkering with the unit.

Never stick your hand or another object into the disposal, especially while it is running.

If it is jammed or making a grinding/clanging sound, turn it off and avoid putting anything down the drain until an emergency plumber can come out and fix it.

Ignoring the problem can cause further issues later, so don’t ignore the signs that something is wrong. Call us today and our emergency plumbers will be out right away to get your garbage disposal working again. We’ll keep you updated every step of the way.

Not every garbage disposal jam requires a call to the plumber! If your disposal stops working, there are a few things you can try before you pick up the phone:

  1. Reset your disposal

The bottom of your garbage disposal should have a RESET button. If the motor jams, turn the disposal off and wait a few minutes, then firmly press this button.

2. Unjam your disposal from the bottom

Check to see if your disposal can be unjammed from the bottom. There should be a small, hexagonal hole where an Allen key can fit – turning this will allow you to turn the flywheel and attempt to dislodge the clog.

3. Check the power

This may seem obvious, but if your garbage disposal isn’t making any noise (not even a hum) it may not be receiving power. If your disposal is plugged into an electrical receptacle under the sink, unplug it and test the outlet with another appliance to ensure it is operational. If your disposal is hardwired to an electrical box, try resetting your circuit breaker panel by flipping it off and on.

If you still can’t get your disposal to work, or if the problem is a leak instead of a clog, don’t worry – just call Soukup Plumbing, Inc.! We’ll come out that same day to fix your garbage disposal as soon as possible.
